Panthers Beyond PHS: Liam Garland

As members of the Pleasantville High School Class of 2026 begin their next chapter, we're highlighting the people, experiences, and memories that made their time at PHS meaningful. 

This week, we're featuring Liam Garland, who will attend UMass Amherst this fall to study Architecture. 

Throughout high school, Liam embraced both the performing and visual arts. He played trumpet in the Concert Band, Jazz Big Band, Advanced Jazz Ensemble, and the student pit orchestra for the Spring Musical. In the visual arts, he challenged himself to grow creatively, evolving from an artist focused on realistic representation to one who could confidently communicate abstract ideas through his work. Along the way, his artwork was displayed at both the Katonah Museum of Art and Northwell Health's new mental health facility.

While those accomplishments are impressive, the experience Liam says shaped him most was the annual Spring Musical. 

"The Spring Musical put on every year was a pivotal experience during my time at PHS... No matter who you are, there is a place for you in the large family of cast and crew that put on the show every year." 

Liam spent three years on the painting crew, served as one of its student leaders during his senior year, contributed to the Lobby Design Crew, and performed in the student pit orchestra. 

Reflecting on those experiences, he shared: 

Liam also credits art teacher Mr. Nemec with helping shape his journey. 

"He helped me grow not only as an artist but also helped me grow significantly as a person... The person I am today would not exist without him." 

Looking ahead, Liam is excited to continue exploring his interests, get involved in student organizations, and meet new people at UMass Amherst. 

His advice for younger Panthers is simple: 

"Get involved in clubs and student organizations as early as possible... There are so many opportunities to get involved at PHS no matter your interests and when you do, it can feel incredibly rewarding."
